“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Mt 5: 13-16)
We are all called to be Salt and Light. The center of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is the life, dignity, and rights of the human person. The social mission of the Church calls us to social justice and charitable works. Social justice is an integral part of evangelization, a constitutive dimension of preaching the gospel and an essential part of the Church’s mission. Pursuit of justice and peace is an essential part of what makes a parish Catholic. As Salt and Light, we’ll work on how to be effective listeners, share life experiences, pray, sing, reflect on the gospel, worship, evangelize and learn about and act on our Catholic social heritage.
We need to be a source of clear moral vision and effective action because:
Our faith is tested by the violence, injustice and moral confusion;
While we live in a time of rampant individualism, we stand for family and community;
At a time of intense consumerism, we need to treat one another with love; and
At a time of the ever-increasing wealth gap between rich and poor, the moral test of our society is how we treat and care for the marginalized, the poor, the voiceless. (USCCB Communities of Salt and Light: Reflections on the Social Mission of the Parish)
Salt and Light’s ministry, anchored in worship and prayer, seeks to reflect on and follow the Lord’s call to conversion, service and justice. Focusing on the words and deeds of Jesus and the teachings of the Church, we will serve to strengthen St. Anthony’s parish in pursuit of justice and peace. All are invited to be Salt and Light.
